CHABTINE, LEBANON - IN PROGRESS 2020
A single story family house emerging form the natural surroundings of Chabtine area. The starting point of the design is based on the pronounced difference of levels and the topographic integration. A geometry of vernacular stone, embedded within the terrain morphology, blends in with the surroundings, each one is dedicated to a private function like the master bedroom, kid’s bedrooms and the service area. Natural materials and earthy colors were used to enhance the particularities of the place. The horizontal layout of the house is made even more distinctive with a floating concrete deck resting on the stone volumes and opening towards the view. A cigar lounge pavilion covered with corten steel is placed on top of the concrete roof mimicking the red color of the existing endemic “Arbutus” trees and crowning the double height entrance. The green roof above the stone volumes acts as an accessible extension of the terrain creating seamless transition from the backyard to the concrete slab.
The internal space, generated by the horizontal plane of the roof and the ground, punctuated by the stone elements, creates a fluid linear circulation starting from the entrance and culminating in the Master suite while simultaneously relating the interior to the exterior context.
The house has been strategically oriented to optimize the view and inject natural light deep into the space throughout the day. A sliding glazed façade in the public area can be totally opened erasing the boundaries between the inside / outside and creating a current of cross ventilation to reduce the heat effect.
Most fundamentally the design response seeks to reposition the home within its unique site, thereby strengthening the bonds of the everyday architectural experience within its immediate landscape.
