The SASC complex is an innovative multi-use development in Kuwait including a gym, pools, restaurants, classes, auditorium, open courts…

In terms of phasing and massing, the project is divided into three blocks: the sports club, the educational center and the restaurants all laid-out around the football fields which act as a giant courtyard.

Restaurants / open courts.

Due to the density of the program compared to site area, the various activities were organized in a vertical disposition on three levels, whereby in addition to the central field, the roofs of the restaurants are also used to accommodate additional tennis and basketball courts. These fields are interconnected by an elevated running track hovering above the ground floor. Sunken gardens at the basement level allow daylight to both classes and indoor fields.

Sports club.

The club features external circulation behind a double skin. They serve dual purposes; as fire escape and as means of extending the access from the ground floor garden all the way to the roof which will include an outdoor cafe as well as a swimming pool. Another feature is the climbing wall volume which punctures the building to the basement bringing in light and as an architectural gesture (the sports icon) magnifying the climbing activity as a spectacle visible to the rest of the project.

Educational center.

Strategically located adjacent to neighboring schools, housing classes and workshops, the center is built around a central atrium bordered by staircases connecting split levels so as to encourage the circulation and intermingling of students. The library volume protrudes as a distinctive box outside the mass of the building to constitute the “cultural icon” as a counterpoint to the “sports icon”.
